The essential teaching left behind by this book is the interconnectedness of the world we live on. When you focus on one aspect only, in this case it was profits, the disregard that it creates for all other connected elements leads to their destruction and downfall. But more important, it all comes full circle because there is only so much you can shelter yourself from when all other competing factors have entered into chaos. In this story it came in the form of the extinction of the commodity that made it all happen, and threat of extinction once more. For nations who only saw one piece of the equation, jobs and some signs of modernity, it caused irreparable damage that they are still trying to overcome.
