MUSIC: New York ‘tin-pan alley’ had become the music central of the world. Ballads, show tunes and novelty were created there. Around this time the record player was invented to music was brought to the masses. One popular song to spring up here was titled “Yes, we have no bananas”. It was composed by Frank Silver in 1923 and was designed to be performed at home. 4 different recordings of the song emerged, the most famous by actor Eddie Cantor. It was derived from the Hallelujah chorus but made more upbeat. The song was written due to shortages from the Panama disease that usually went unnoticed because of the expansion of plantations into new land.
